Juulia Kala
(born 1994 in Helsinki, Finland) is a filmmaker, visual artist and artist educator based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Drawing from her passion in myths, folklore, liminality & environmental themes, Kala's films explore the fluid relationship of imagination and reality. She likes to combine different mediums and genres in her work, and tell the stories of characters who are in liminal phases of their lives – transforming and searching for their place in this world.
She graduated as an MA in Film Directing from the international Kino Eyes the European Movie Masters joint degree in 2020 from Lisbon, Edinburgh and Tallinn, and she has a BA in cinematography and editing from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Helsinki.
Juulia has worked as a Script & Talent Coordinator, Director's Assistant, 2nd Assistant Director and Script Supervisor in various film and TV productions in Finland, and she currently works as an Artist Educator in community arts and education projects for children and young people in Edinburgh. She has directed 4 short films, and she is currently writing her first feature.
