Brief History and Background
Cabaret Voltaire Societe & Diversions (CVSD) grew out of a personal desire for more engaging and unique experiences January 2016 in Victoria BC. The name is homage to the birthplace of the Dada Art movement, The Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich Switzerland and our production style is greatly inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s concept of ‘Readymades’. It was at the Cabaret Voltaire that unique artistic experiences or Diversions took place and provided an inclusive platform for the avant garde and experimental artists of the Dada movement.
Out of Dada grew the Surrealists, Fluxus Manifesto and arguably the punk subculture. Cabaret Voltaire Societe & Diversions seeks to continue this thread of inspiration by creating and providing diversions from the norm to spur playful experimentation in both creators and observers alike!
Mandate
Established in 2016 and formally incorporated as a BC Non-Profit Society March 5 2018, Cabaret Voltaire Societe & Diversions seeks to create engaging, accessible, inclusive, and imaginative experiences through experimental art that encourage audiences and performers alike to expand upon their relationships with creative expression.
Constitution
Identity
The name of the Society is Cabaret Voltaire Societe & Diversions and current meeting take place online at our decentralized headquarters on zoom. Our primary geographical region of activity is the Greater Victoria area, additionally we make connections around the world to unify likeminded creators, thinkers and makers.
Cabaret Voltaire Societe & Diversions is established and operated exclusively for charitable purposes by advancing experimental creative expression and will devote all resources (financial, personal, and property) to carry out these goals
Objective
The Purposes of the Society are :
1. Provide unique inclusive and engaging experiences of experimental art & music to the general public
2. Provide a platform for the misunderstood, marginalised, and underrepresented creators of our community.
3. Provide opportunities for both audiences and performers to expand their own creative expression
4. Provide educational cross-generational mentorships in creative empowerment and artistic appreciation
Governance & Membership
The Board of Directors of Cabaret Voltaire Societe & Diversions is vested in its members. Members of CVSD are all performers and attendees of CVSD events as well as those that wish to be formally initiated into the society. The membership retains unto itself the right of self-government in all phases of its life and organization, at the annual general meeting the membership will approve of the elected board of directors by vote.
Nonprofit Status and Dissolution
Cabaret Voltaire Societe & Diversions shall be carried on without purpose of gain from its members, and any profits or other accretions to the organization shall be used solely to promote its purposes. Upon dissolution and after the payment of all liabilities, all remaining assets will be given to the qualified done, Vocal Victoria: Voice of Concern For Animal Life.
